IPTV on Springfield’s WiFi menu

NEC Australia has signed a landmark deal with the Greater Springfield development in Queensland to build ubiquitous data connection that will be used to drive future services – including residential IP television.

The company said it had entered a strategic alliance with Springfield’s $100 million Polaris Centre to increase the new city’s technology capability. NEC says the three year alliance would ensure future growth was “entirely driven by e-technology”.

Greater Springfield is located in Southeast Queensland and is the largest ‘planned’ community in Australia. The $15 billion project began in 1992 with four suburbs and a central business district. It has become the fastest growing municipality in the country with three families relocating to the areas each day.

“This is one of the most important projects we’re pursuing in Australia; providing integrated end-to-end communication solutions to Australia’s growing communities is a key focus for NEC,” said NEC Australia managing director, Toshiharu Isawa.

The company wants to use the Springfield venture as a showcase for its technology, and rather than focusing on meeting just business needs would target a complete “work-life” balance for the area.

NEC said the Springfield model would be loosely based on Japan’s U-Japan initiative – called “Ubiquitous Networks Society by 2010” – a program designed to provide communications solutions to residents “anytime, anywhere, by anything and anyone.”

The project means new residents will have access to a range of bundled solutions including high-speed wireless internet, IPTV services and other multi-media solutions, the company said.

NEC will occupy Polaris Data Centre to house the infrastructure they plan to deploy, and will interconnect with a wider network of telecommunications firms to give residents choice for internet and telephone services.

The company will also be involved in the Springfield Health Precinct, which is still in the planning stages.
